This week the Pre-schoolers have been delving further into the arctic world. They have been busy investigating ice due to the freezing weather outside; a number of children are particularly interested in how the ice freezes and melts. Using binoculars and magnifying glasses, we have been searching the garden high and low to find icicles and any other traces of ice. The childrens’ understanding of the world as well as their understanding of cause and effect has been further developed as result of this. They have also been particularly busy using their senses during craft making this week; their motor skills for example whilst they use a variety of instruments and tools such as rollers to decorate their ‘chimney’ fashioned from a cardboard box, the very chimney that poor Santa got stuck down. The children commented on how the rollers made bigger marks than that of a paint brush, but how a paint brush would be better for the edges as it was thinner; allowing the children to choose how to do things, to discuss how this may be achieved but also contributing their own ideas or finding other ways to tackle a problem. At the same time their focus was drawn to the shape of the box, how it was 3D rather than 2D and considered what other shapes/objects might be similar. This allowed the children to further their mathematical language as well as to make links to other objects in their surroundings.
As our Christmas gathering is not far away, we would love for the children to be practising their songs at home with their parents in readiness; please see below a flavour of the selection and lyrics for your participation.
The babies have been focusing on their physical development as well as their communication and language skills. Some of the children have been very interested in playing football as they have observed the older children playing whilst out in the garden. They positioned the cones into a space to represent a goal and proceeded to try and kick a ball between the two – just as the older children did. The children showed good concentration skills as well as keeping on trying when they missed, often making eye contact and smiling at an adult to show how proud they were of their achievement.
Our 2-year olds have been busy developing their communication and language skills by joining the others in song, singing nursery rhymes and selected Christmas tunes. They have been using their listening and attention skills to copy some of the words and in some cases, put two words together, as well as trying to mimic the actions.
