News from the rooms for week commencing 30th September 2024

Saplings:
We Saplings have enjoyed a variety of rocket-themed activities as Willow is so enthusiastic about everything space related.
The children impressed practitioners by painting some bold and bright rocket pictures, perfecting their brush stroke motion as they got to work. Stickers were added as a finishing touch to give the effect of the rocket taking off. We’ve framed the collages and they’re now hanging on the wall for all to see.
We also challenged the Saplings to make a junk modelling rocket. Alba sweetly decided to name the group’s space vehicle ‘Oscar’. Once complete, the rocket was placed on a Tuff Tray alongside tin-foil asteroids plus alien and planet symbols.
From next week, we will be asking each child to bring in their favourite book. To extend this idea, we’ll task the Saplings with crafting a model linked to the story. First up is Otis who will be bringing in a book on trains to share with his friends.

Acorns:
This week in Acorns, we have been exploring the different seasons. The children loved learning about why the leaves change colour at this time of year, thinking about how they evolve and change from soft to crunchy.
We’ve been busy creating some beautiful displays of the Acorns’ artwork. The children had fun exploring different textures of leaves and mixing colours while printing the pattern of the leaves onto paper. River especially enjoyed combining the colours in her hands and proudly showed off the shades she’d created to the adults. We continued to get messy in preparation for Halloween by mixing paint to achieve an orange hue as a representation of pumpkins.
While outside in the Broughton Cottage garden, the children had a brilliant time getting creative with shape moulds in the sandpit. A practitioner gathered up some sticks too and asked the children to have a go at drawing a pattern in the sand. Our bikes were very popular too with the children using all their mighty efforts to propel themselves forward.

Leo – For exploring outside in the garden and finding different objects.
Seedlings:
The children have been looking at all things autumnal and started our week off with a treasure hunt seeking out different types of outdoor resources including leaves of varying shades, different shaped twigs and conker shells which were very prickly. This is a great way to explore our senses of touch and sound.
Next the children created a collage with their findings, glueing and sticking onto card, allowing us individual time to discuss with the children texture, colour, and smell completing the fun as we played with some conkers, rolling them in paint and watching what patterns they created as they whizzed across the paper.

Oaks:
We had a brilliant time transforming cardboard boxes this week with the Oaks. It was wonderful to see the children’s imaginations run wild as they realised their box had endless possibilities. Helgi wanted to make a castle complete with resident dragons, while Colby’s became a pirate ship that sailed the seas in search of treasure. Amelie K decided that she wanted to make a truly beautiful box and carefully painted flowers on the outside.
We spent time focussing on the Three Little Pigs this week too, with the children re-creating the plot using natural resources from the garden. William thrived in his role as the Big Bad Wolf and blew down Peggy’s house made of sticks and Alice’s straw home. Heer kept all of the little piggies safe in a brick house.
Jolly Phonics was a key part of our week with the Oaks too. S, A and T were our focus letters and we’ve had so much fun having scavenger hunts outside to look for items beginning with each letter.
